Hi, I’m Justin, a Registered Clinical Counsellor in BC and a Canadian Certified Counsellor. I practice virtually primarily in British Columbia and Manitoba. I offer counselling services tailored for individual adults.
Selecting the right professional to work with is important. I hope many of your questions are answered here. If what you see is a good fit, let’s connect. I’m always open to talking about counselling and how I might be of service.
Given my professional experience and training, I am positioned to best serve adults who struggle with:
• Anxiety, relationships, and substance use with potential underlying trauma.
• Alcohol, cannabis, gambling, online, gaming, porn, and other common substances and habits.
• Concurrent disorders with a focus on depressive, anxiety, and mood disorders.
• Complex life circumstances involving family, relationships, divorce, diagnoses, education, workplace issues, and relocation.
Originally from Winnipeg, I obtained a Master of Counselling in Counselling Psychology graduate degree from Athabasca University. I was trained and supervised by the clinical team lead at East Kootenay Addictions Services Society in Cranbrook, BC. I counselled a range of adults affected directly and indirectly by substance use and related issues. Working with clients included working carefully with their underlying trauma, current health situations, relationships, and immediate resources. I worked with clients with psychiatric diagnoses and explored these with them. I practiced principles of Harm Reduction and Core Addictions Practice based in compassion.
I conducted group therapy and mental health education in the East Kootenay community alongside members of ANKORS, a local outreach organization. I consulted and coordinated with my clinical supervisor, team of counsellors, social workers, treatment centres, community organizations, and doctors in East Kootenay. I currently maintain a strong support network which includes my former supervisor and mentor as well as colleagues.
My approach is holistic in nature and integrates cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and solution focused therapy (SFT). It is informed by Taoist and Buddhist philosophy. It is constantly evolving and incorporates aspects of other theories. This includes working with acceptance, meaning, emotional regulation, expectations, boundaries, psychological flexibility, distress tolerance, personal constructs, freedom, responsibility, paradox and authenticity, among others.
For relationship issues, I incorporate aspects from The Gottman Method. This includes working with emotional communication, managing conflict, negative communication patterns, enhancing friendship, and rituals of connection, among others.
My approach continues to be informed by experiences with clients and current literature as well as ongoing education, cultural learning, feedback from colleagues, personal growth, and professional development.
